A young boxer from Middleton Select Boxing Club has been named the North West Schools Champion.

Matthew Hopkins, 13, won against Callum Routeledge, of Carlisle Villa Boxing Club in the North West final of the School Championships in the 42 to 44kg weight category on 22 April.

The Edgar Wood Academy student has been boxing at Middleton Select for just over one year and now goes on to the England Boxing National Schools Championships quarter-finals.

Boxing coach Martyn Lynch congratulated Matthew and thanked supporters.

He said: “Well done Matthew, and thanks to all the support for coming.”

The England Boxing National Schools Championships 2023 quarter-finals will take place this weekend, ahead of the national semi-finals and finals at the Guildford Spectrum on Saturday 13 May and Sunday 14 May.
