Rugby league: Greetland 30 - 10 Mayfield

Date published: 04 May 2023

After the late cancellation of their cup game against Woolston on Saturday 29 April, Andy Reid's Mayfield NWML side came to the rescue of Halifax based Greetland All Rounders.

Greetland were putting on a game to raise funds for cancer charities and needed opponents after they too faced a late cancellation. After Andy put the call out he managed to take a squad of 20 players over the Pennines for the game. The squad included three dads and lads combinations with Curly and Rob Kershaw, Andy and Isaac Reid and Big Dave and Baby Dave Mills.

Greetland had dug deep and put out a team of quality young players. Right from the kick-off the home side stated their intention with some fierce defence and strong powerful drives. Mayfield were caught as Greetland scored and early try, 4 - 0.

Rob Kershaw got the team together and and set down a game plan and a few simple rules to follow. From the restart they looked a different team, playing with confidence and flair moving the ball acrosss the line in possession and stopping the attacks in defence. Sam Hilton, Dave Mills Jnr and George Hartley set the pace. Mills Jnr, playing his first game since his concussion against Newcastle in the Challenge Cup was inspirational as he looked to impress his dad. The latter showed the former the way as he bounced on to a short ball from Paul Hancock and showed his power as he carried three defenders over to level the scores 4 - 4.

Rob Kershaw rallied the troops trying to instil some self belief into the lads, this worked with Harrison Chapel, Josh Clarke and Sean McKenna pulling out all the stops as Mayfield took the game to Greetland. The two sides traded tries with Mayfield's second coming from the non-stop work horse Sam Hilton, converted by Jack Green, 10 - 10.

Try as they might Mayfield couldnt get the all important next score as Greetland's superior fitness began to tell. In the end Greetland proved too much for Mayfield and they ran out comfortable winners but Reidy's side made sure they knew they'd been a game. They showed great promise and no shortage of skill which will put them in good stead for the rest of the season. There were some great performances from the Mayfield lads especially the efforts put in by Dads' Army, Curly Kershaw, Dave Mills and Andy Reid but also from the younger end Spenser Denson Hughes, Billy Pirouzan, Brad Rowley and Isaac Reid.

Stand out man of the match on the day was 'Baby Dave Mills' who said he is ready for a return to action with the senior side this weekend.
