Mayfield’s ‘Building the Future’ school programme now in full flow

Date published: 16 May 2023

A rugby programme from Rochdale Mayfield is underway in local schools.

Building the Future is about providing a fun, engaging environment to introduce children from the borough’s primary schools to the sport of rugby league.

Qualified coaches from Rochdale Mayfield ARLFC are providing schools with free rugby league delivery for classes during and after curriculum time.

Building the Future sessions focus on fun and high energy, with children having the opportunity to learn core rugby league skills whilst improving their fundamental movement skills with an emphasis on teamwork and personal development.

Led by the club’s development officer, Carl Abraham, the club committee wanted to break barriers and rebuild lost relationships.

“Rugby league within primary schools of the borough is minimal,” said Carl. “And funding for extra-curricular activities is not freely available.

“Schools have to prioritise their limited funds and unfortunately rugby league in the borough is not a priority.

“Through generous sponsorship and funding, we are proud to be able to offer these programmes as funded and therefore free to the schools to ensure that the children are given an opportunity to partake in one of our many planned programmes.”

Building the Future 23/1 is sponsored by Sun Chemical Ltd and The Stephen Gartland Foundation.

Carl added: “We are absolutely delighted with the number of schools that have already signed up to one of our planned 2023 programmes.

“The club pay tribute to all for believing and allowing our club coaches the opportunity to provide your students with an insight into the sport. The feedback and enquiries we’ve received since starting highlights the want and definitely proves that Building the Future is here for the long-haul.”

If you want to be involved through sponsorship or belong to a school that would like to benefit from Mayfield’s free programmes then please email the club on info@rochdalemayfield.com.
