Rugby league: Hinpool 28 - 36 Mayfield NWML

Date published: 09 May 2023

Mayfield's North West Men's League team travelled to Cumbria on Saturday 6 May to face Hindpool and were looking to return to winning ways after some gutsy performances recently where they had fallen short.

New signings Gaz Ellison and Alex West bring a wealth of experience and some much needed physicality to the side and gave the team a new found confidence. Mayfield had a solid start and in the first 20 minutes, tries from Billy Pirouzan, Alex West and hooker Sam Hilton, made it look like Hindpool were in for a tough afternoon. Unfortunately, Mayfield seemed to switch off for the next 20 minutes and Hindpool found their footing in the game and managed to get some points on the board.

The second half started in the same vein with Mayfield struggling to find their rhythm and Hindpool narrowed the gap further. Massive performances from winger George Hartley and Callum Garside in the backs, coupled with some much needed impact up the middle from Ellison and the impressive Spencer Denson Hughes meant that Mayfield finally got a grip of the match. Further tries from Hilton and Hartley meant that on the day Mayfield claimed the victory.

Man of the match was the fantastic George Hartley and there was a special mention for mascot Bradley Ellison, who proved to be a good luck charm.
