Rugby league: Leigh Miners 6 - 46 Mayfield

Date published: 25 May 2023

The conditions at Twist Lane on Saturday 20 May were perfect for fast, open, flowing rugby and that's exactly what Mayfield produced as they continued their great run of form.

The first few minutes saw two sides testing each other out for supremacy. It was Mayfield who came out on top in those early exchanges and they never looked back. Sean Penkywicz at 9 and Sam Wright at 6 have developed a real understanding of each others play and this coupled with Devlin Long at 7 and Dec Sheridan coming on to replace Penkywicz is what is behind the Mayfield success. Good drives early on from Dave Mills and Ben Metcalfe got Mayfield behind the Leigh ten metre line and the defensive line was opened by a neat little kick through from Wright which Jordan Parr followed up to open his and Mayfields account, 0 - 4.

As often happens when things aren't going well, Leigh's heads went down. The Mayfield half backs sensed this and started throwing the ball about with ease and confidence. It wasn't long before Parr had his second as he finished a flowing move, touching down under the sticks after taking a great inside ball from Tolhurst, he converted to make it 0 - 10.

Miners picked up their game from this point and played some decent stuff but the Mayfield defence just wouldn't give. Luke Fowden, Seta Tala and Nick Hargreaves were awesome. Mayfield were completely in control now and were rewarded when Dakota Tolhurst continued his excellent start to his Mayfield career with a try, 0 - 14.

Mayfield didn't ease off and kept applying the pressure which paid dividends when the Long brothers combined as Dev put Travis in for a try, 0 - 18.

Wayne English was next on the score sheet to make it 0 - 22 before half time.

The game was effectively over as a contest and the second half went much the same way as the first. Although, to their credit a never say die attitude saw Miners open their scoring. This was the only blot on Mayfield's copy book as they went on to score five more tries through, Wright, Travis Long, Dec and Harry Sheridan, and Wayne English rounded off the scoring with his second try.

This was another accomplished performance from Mayfield and one which made the coaches very happy. Sam Wright was named man of the match for a non-stop blockbusting afternoon.
