New past players’ association 'Club 1958' formed at Mayfield

Date published: 16 October 2023

A new past players’ association has been formed at Mayfield, ‘Club 1958’, with ex-players encouraged to get in touch.

The association has been founded by past player Lee Durrant, who said the idea has “been kicking around for a while.”

He said: “There are literally hundreds of players who have played at the club – be it at youth level or open age, first team, second team, ladies’ team and we would like to welcome them back to their club.

“Mayfield is a really welcoming place with a great atmosphere and some great rugby on show too. A lot of players just drift away when they finish playing and the club doesn't hear from them again, and we'd like to change that.

“Rugby isn't just about playing the game; it's also about the camaraderie and the friends you make and we want to rekindle some of those friendships.”

Club 1958 has a Facebook page with around 225 members so far, with more people encouraged to get in touch and join.

Lee continued: “The response has been fantastic; some people are swapping memories but people are posting old photos and write ups from the newspaper, including right back as far as Mayfield’s first ever game in 1958.

“We realise that not everyone is on Facebook but they can maybe get access from friends and family members. We are also trying to build a database of ex-players so that we can keep them informed of any events or get togethers that we have.”

Lee added: “As we develop, we will be holding events and get togethers at the club.

“The first of these get togethers has already been planned and has been dubbed 'the blast from the past' and a brilliant night is guaranteed.”

Hosted by Mick 'Braddy' Bradshaw, the ‘blast from the past’ will be held at the Mayfield club at 7pm on 10 November, featuring a pie and pea supper, a Q and A session with a couple of ex-players plus entertainment from comedian John Gillan. Tickets cost £10.
