Rowers compete in Boxing Day thrash
Date published: 29 December 2011
Boxing Day found many Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club members battling with very tough conditions on the lake to compete in their annual Boxing Day thrash.
Names were drawn out of a hat to make up crews who then raced over a 700m course across the water.
Three teams of eight were made up of potential Olympians, novices and those who just fancied a go.
A spokesperson for the Club, said: “Due to the work being carried out by United Utilities, the water level is very low meaning that crews had to wade into the water just to get into the boats; however this did not seem to put them off as there was some very close racing with the eventual victors winning the undying admiration of the many spectators watching from the warmth of the clubhouse. After a lunch of roast pork sandwiches the crews got down to some serious training in the bar.
“2012 is Olympic year and also the 140th anniversary of the Hollingworth club – this will be celebrated with many events culminating in October with the Club Dinner where Olympian Debbie Flood and GB Junior Coach Richard Boulton will be guest speakers.”
