Mayfield 64 – 28 Dewsbury

Date published: 17 March 2014

Mayfield made easy work of this Kingston Press div 1 game at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday.

From the first attack, Joe Qaunici broke through from his own half and Rob Kershaw finished the move with a try out wide. Aidan Gleeson converted.

Kershaw was again involved before Todd O'Brien threw a wide ball out for Jack Sampson to increase Mayfield's lead.

The tries came thick and fast as Mayfield threw the ball about full of confidence, seemingly scoring at will.

Further first half tries came from Aidan Gleeson, Todd O`Brien and Callum Marriott, who crashed over after taking a perfectly timed pass from Sam Butterworth.

Dewsbury rallied before half time grabbing two tries.

Half time: Mayfield 28 – 10 Dewsbury

The introduction of Billy Percy received a big cheer as, making his debut, he adapted to the pace of the game straight away and made an immediate impact as he too took the ball to the line.

Dewsbury made a good start to the second half but it didn`t take Mayfield long to regain the upper hand as Percy made a break and Brearley took the ball another thirty yards before O`Brien found Calland who strolled in untouched.

Tries were traded then in a scrappy twenty minute spell with Calland grabbing his second and Qanuici adding another for Mayfield.

Slack defence gifted Dewsbury three tries and with ten minutes remaining Mayfield could have been forgiven for sitting back but a high Butterworth kick was fumbled and picked up by Marriott who found Qanuici who in turn gave the ball to Ieuan Higgs to go over. Gleeson converted.

Qanuici and Si Moore added further tries to round off the scoring.

Mayfield showed some brilliant touches in attack but allowed a very ordinary Dewsbury side to take 28 points; this will give the coaches cause for concern and plenty to work on in training.

A club spokesman said: "There were plenty of good points to build on and some excellent performances. The forwards were in control this week and this allowed the team room to work and throw the ball around, something that was missing last week. Liam Whalley again proved his worth as he moved into the pack and put in solid performance.

"Marrriott and Moore were also outstanding while in the backs Carl Abram Jack Sampson and Paul Brearley."

Opposition coaches gave Qanuici the Man-of-the-Match award, while the sponsors went for Billy Percy.
