Latchford Albion 20 - 12 Mayfield U18

Date published: 11 April 2014

Mayfield U18 travelled to Warrington on Thursday night on the back of two good wins in the league and also with a strong training session on Tuesday night under their belts and coach Andy Battersby was confident they would be too strong for their opposition but Latchford side took the spoils.

Mayfield cruised into a 12 - 0 lead after just 20 minutes with tries from Kyle Greenwood and Declan Sheridan. Brad Gartland added the extras on both occasions.

The Latchford side stuck to their game plan of using their very big forwards for two drives and swinging the ball out wide early in every play.

Mayfield started to lose focus on moving in a line and also on sliding defence. This was to cost them dearly as they allowed two tries in, both on the last tackle and both through slack defence. Latchford converted one of the tries leaving Mayfield with a slim 12-10 lead.

Mayfield's go forward play was becoming too predictable, as plays broke down and ball retention was poor, frustration led to a raft of needless penalties which also served to undo them as they allowed Latchford another converted try with only ten minutes to go.

A reshuffle of the team saw some increased pressure from Mayfield and they were camped on the Latchford try line for three repeat sets but were unable to break through the strong defence as they kept trying to go up the middle.

As Mayfield threw caution to the wind in search of a winner, Latchford forced a break and were able to score what turned out to be the decider in the game.

As the whistle blew Mayfield were left wondering how they had let a 12 point lead slip.
