Ruth Walczak competed in the Rowing World Cup III

Date published: 15 July 2014

Ruth Walczak, from Rochdale, raced in the Rowing World Cup III this weekend (11-13 July) in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Ruth raced alongside teammates Brianna Stubbs, Ellie Piggott and Charlotte Taylor.

The crew would usually race in the Lightweight Women’s Quadruple Scull category. However, with no Lightweight Quad event at the World Cup, the crew raced in the Open Weight category and produced some extremely promising results.

The team raced in the ‘B’ Final on Sunday morning and finished second (eighth in the competition overall), beating heavyweight crews from Denmark and Italy who have an average weight advantage of over two stone.

In the final, the crew were beaten by a fellow GB team and finished with a time of 6:50.05.

The GB Rowing Team’s Performance Director, Sir David Tanner, said: “It has been a very positive day today with our 11 Olympic class finalists and eight medals from those as well as our two medals from the international classes.”

“Lucerne has not always been our finest regatta, but today we have laid a very good base for our World Championships campaign in Amsterdam.”

The World Championships will take place in Amsterdam on 24-31 August.
