Ruth Walczak selected to represent Team GB at the 2014 World Rowing Championships

Date published: 14 August 2014

Ruth Walczak, from Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club, has been selected to represent Team GB at the 2014 World Rowing Championships, which this year are being hosted at the famous Bosbaan in Amsterdam.

Ruth will race in the lightweight womens quad, and after winning bronze at the World Championships in Korea in 2013 and a silver medal in the second World Cup Regatta held in France in June this year, there is no doubt she will be on the medal hunt once again.

Ruth and the rest of the crew are now away on final camp in Italy, where they will be honeing all the physical, technical and mental elements before they depart for Amsterdam.

Ruth said: “The women’s lightweight quad is a really exciting crew to be part of and it is such a contrast to my experience in the single scull. All four of us are all very like minded individuals and have been working together really well in training so I can’t wait to see what we can produce when it really counts at the World Championships”

Ruth is very grateful for support from Sport Lottery Funding towards her costs and gym membership from Link4Life.

The World Rowing Championships are the climax of each rowing season outside of Olympic and Paralympic years.

Over 70 countries will line up to determine the best rowers in the world for 2014. Top contending nations will include New Zealand, Great Britain, Australia, Germany, the United States and China, to name a few. The Netherlands will also be a force to reckon with as they are a great rowing nation and they always have lots of home support.

Rowing was not part of this year’s Commonwealth Games but it is hoped that rowing may return to the Commonwealth Games programme in 2018.
