Bridge Juniors Football Club establishes disability football squad

Date published: 19 October 2014

Bridge Juniors Football Club has set up a disability squad.

Bridgeability offers an opportunity to the disabled community to enjoy football at no cost to the participant.

The initiative now has up to 30 participants every week across a range of ages from seven to 18 year olds taking part at Redwood Secondary School.

Kit and equipment has been made available via contributions - with the support from local councillors that represent the ward the club is based in and Greater Sport through the Sportivate programme.

The group also recently paid a visit to the club's host side in Bamford for a chance for participants to see and experience what being part of a football club is like.

A spokesperson for Bridgeablity said: “Hopefully now the football they can look forward to playing can take a step on from being training sessions to actual matches.

“There are a range of opportunities available over the next few months that the club will be engaged in and attending with their very enthusiastic group of young disabled participants. The most important element will be to focus on what they can do, not what they can’t.”

Bridgeability is run primarily in partnership with Redwood Secondary School, however there is now a satellite session being established which will be delivered at Hopwood Hall College in Middleton for 16 and 17 year olds who attend sixth form at the site.

Sessions are held at the Indoor Sports Hall at Redwood Secondary School every Monday between 5pm and 6pm.
