BMX riders raise £6,000

Members of Roch Valley Riders, along with several other BMX riders, have raised £6,000 for the daughter of famous BMX racer Damian Myles.

Roch Valley Riders raised £1,000 on Saturday (18 October) by holding a BMX themed event at the BMX track in Queens Park, Heywood.

Saturday’s event was a ‘jam format’ and saw racers of all ages having fun. The event also included a jumping competition, pump racing, strider racing and ‘go as fast as you can’ racing.

As well as being attended by local riders, the event saw a number of North West BMX riders turn out to support the fundraising.

Yvonne Mills from Roch Valley Riders said: “It was a really good event. We had a really good day.”

A further £5,000 was raised through a combination of collecting donations at various BMX races. Donations were collected at the National Indoor BMX Centre in Manchester and at an old school BMX demonstration which also included a raffle and auction with prizes donated from the BMX community.

BMX riders Simon Bailey, Uncle Buck and Darren Oakes orgasined the collections and the BMX demonstration.

Damian, 43, died in September after battling cancer for more than a year. He had been a champion BMX rider and was once the UK’s number one BMX racer for his age.

Money raised from the groups fundraising will now be handed to Damian’s daughter Ruby to go into a trust fund.

Roch Valley Riders are a BMX club based in Heywood. The club is run without any funding so the next event held by the club will be held to raise money to pay for track maintenance.
