British Police 0 - 38 Mayfield

Date published: 03 February 2015

Mayfield travelled to Leeds on a freezing cold Sunday afternoon to face the Police in the first round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup and triumphed relatively easily against a side that showed some flashes of good rugby but inevitably lacked the experience and the fitness to pose too much of a problem for Mayfield.

The game was only two minutes old when Todd O'Brien chased his own kick through to touch down unchallenged.

There were some excellent touches from the Rochdale side and some good performances.

The two new overseas signings, Tom Lavis and Dave Wood, showed they are adjusting to the weather and should prove to be good acquisitions for the club.

The youngsters in the squad stood out on the day, with Jack Rush, Sean Mulcahy and Niall Bradley all making telling contributions.

The performance of the day however went to another youngster, Declan Sheridan who started at full back before stepping in at hooker after O'Brien left the field with an injury.

As well as playing a big part in helping his side to keep a clean sheet, Sheridan also grabbed a hat-trick of tries.

Nick Hargreaves, Dave Wood and Liam Whalley weighed in with Mayfield's other tries and Tom Lavis added five goals to round off the scoring.

The forwards again looked good with the prompting of Sam Butterworth and Todd O'Brien getting the best out of their pack. Matty Moores, Liam Whalley and Eric Johnson worked non stop and were well supported by Mark Biggins and Aidan Gleeson.

This wasn't the best Mayfield performance but the players did what was required on a bitterly cold afternoon and showed that there is more to come in what promises to be an exciting but very tough season.
