A new boat creates great excitement

Date published: 16 February 2015

Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club (HLRC) took delivery of a newly purchased boat at the Club on the evening of Thursday 12 February.

During the junior circuit training, Ruud Pepping of Hudson Boats arrived with the boat duly wrapped and strapped to the trailer which he had driven from Amsterdam that day.

The boat is a dual purpose coxless quad – for sculling, or four – for rowing. It can be rigged for either use so offers a versatile alternative for mid weight seniors and juniors alike.

The boat will not be seen on the lake for a few weeks as it requires a full assembly of foot plates, shoes, riggers, gates, and everything else to make it safe and operational – a job for club captain, Ian John.

Many years of fund-raising have made the purchase possible, co-ordinated by Denise John - everything from social event takings, hiring club house facilities, bacon butties and drinks every weekend, and the sponsored Boston Rowing Marathon event, which saw several thousand pounds raised by the junior team, have gone towards achieving the price of over 12 thousand pounds.

As a training boat previously used by the Canadian Rowing Squad, it has a good pedigree.

The manufacturer of the boat, Hudson, is renowned for being the builders of the finest rowing boats in the world.

The boat will be named at an event at the club in June.
