Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club women's J14 quad win at the York Summer Regatta 2015

Date published: 24 June 2015

The women's J14 quad of Maggie Page, Molly Archbold, Sally Tisdall and Hannah Lowe, coxed by Jess Pilkington, won their sem-final and final with great style – the first win for the crew - as a team of juniors and seniors from Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club enjoyed a great day’s racing at the York Summer Regatta on Sunday 21 June.

The two lane course was 1,000m downstream along the River Ouse, racing towards York Minster, which peeked above the trees in the historic city.

The first two wins of the day went to the seniors. Paul Gooder, one of the most experienced members of the club, raced against a strong opponent from the City of Cambridge RC but held on for victory.

Leanna Daniels and Reece Handley gave an excellent demonstration of rowing to win their mixed doubles race against a crew from Newark.

The juniors had mixed fortunes but all raced with great determination. In the women's double sculls, Poppy Fletcher and Rosie Pickles (WJ13), Hannah Lowe and Molly Archbold (WJ14), Lucy Lonergan and Amy Aspinall (WJ15) and Amy Bullock and Laura Aspinall (WJ17) all fought hard and did themselves proud but were unable to overcome strong opposition.

The men's double sculls crew of Tom Wing and Nathan Scheider (J14) also lost in a difficult quarter-final race.

The closest and most exciting race of the day was a first time outing for the women's coxed four. Sweep rowing in their first competition, Laura Aspinall, Amy Bullock, Sarah Eckersley, Jasmine Ruane, and Amy Aspinall coxing, showed real determination and drive only to lose in the last few strokes of the race. They were doubly disappointed having had to re-start the race because the other crew crashed shortly after the first start.

The last races of the day were the singles. Sally Tisdall (WJ14) and Maurice Barber (J14) both fought hard but were beaten in their respective semi-finals.

With less than a week to recover, a large team from the club is travelling down to Shropshire for the Ironbridge Regatta on Saturday 27 June.
