Thornhill 42 - 10 Mayfield

Date published: 06 July 2015

Premier division Mayfield were unceremoniously dumped out of the Conference Trophy by third division Thornhill Trojans on Saturday.

Mayfield were completely outclassed by their opponents in every department.

In blistering conditions Thornhill had made their intentions clear before the crowd had finished applying their sun cream as Mayfield failed to clear an innocuous looking kick through and the Thornhill winger dived through and touched down.

From the restart Callum Marriott managed to regather the ball and quick play saw Mayfield on the Thorhill ten where Sam Butterworth dummied his way through for a great try, which he converted himself.

There followed a scrappy 15 minutes of play from both sides during which Todd O’Brien found himself in the sin bin after being involved in an altercation.

From the resulting penalty smart play saw Thornhill extend their lead.

Thornhill began to take control of the game with tough uncompromising defence and quick skilful play.

The return of O’Brien saw Mayfield attempt to regain their composure and some good rugby saw the impressive Liam Whalley crash over to level the scores.

That was the last time Mayfield were in the game as Thornhill took complete control with their standoff running the show.

The home side scored another try and a penalty before half time.

Half time: Thornhill 18 - 10 Mayfield

The second half was all THornhill as they ran in another five unanswered tries.

The 42 – 10 score line was a fair reflection of the game.

Coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth will just have to put the experience behind them, this was a bad day for what is really a class Mayfield team, there were players missing on the day but the team made no excuses and just had to accept what had happened and move on.

Dave Wood tried hard all game and Dec Sheridan took the Mayfield man-of-the-match award, there was also useful contribution from debutant Matty Ashton.

Mayfield Team: Seta Tala, Lewis Sheridan, Komai Nualamatua, Dave Wood, Liam Whalley, Rob Kershaw, Sam Butterworth, Eric Johnson, Jake Boardman, Ben Butterworth, Liam Whalley, Jack Rush, Aidan Gleeson, Declan Sheridan, Sean Mulcahy, Todd O’Brien, Mark Biggins.
