Too few runs for Heywood meant too few problems for Norden

Date published: 28 July 2015

Heywood simply failed to make enough runs as they lost at home to Norden on Saturday.

After winning the toss at Crimble, Heywood could only muster 152 off 48.4 overs.

This proved a relatively straightforward chase for Norden, who eased home with more than four overs to spare.

The Norden opening attack of Martin Smith and Hartley was on fine form and they gave the Heywood batsmen little to score off.

Wes Hunt was first to go to Hartley, after the bowler had seen a number of hearty appeals turned down, before Cross feathered one behind off Dean Lord.

Former Oldham pro Smith was bowling excellently without luck, but Heywood unluckily lost pro Rob Nicol to Lord and from here the going was tough.

Captain Danny Pawson looked in good form but could only find Lord when trying to score off visiting pro Daniel Salpietro on 38.

Sean Burrill – showing more potential – found Harman at short midwicket when going well.

It was left to Dom Humphreys, on his debut, to put up some resistance against his former team, and his 22 bodes well for Heywood.

With Norden excellent in the field and giving little width, Heywood fell well short of a good target.

Heywood needed wickets but Andy Dawson bowled a loose spell, which undid the accurate spell from Chris Humphreys, also playing his first game.

Humphreys made the breakthrough, bowling Harman.

Joe Lovell had Udwadia brilliantly caught by Nicol at slip.

The big wicket looked like it had come just before drinks when Lovell hit the pads of Ash Gowers, but the umpire thought it was missing.

All the time, Salpietro was playing beautifully and looked to be taking Norden to a comfortable win. He went trying to blast Lovell for 71,and it looked, briefly, as though Heywood could get back into the game.

A loose over from Humza Naeem – despite earlier taking a wicket – eased the pressure and Norden won on their last visit to Crimble.
