Heywood ladies cricket is back

Date published: 03 August 2015

Women’s cricket is returning to Heywood Cricket Club later this summer with the long term aim of establishing a full women’s cricket section.

The club had a thriving women’s cricket section back in the 1970s with regular fixtures and in more recent times players such as Sue Fawcett and Jenny and Kate Cross have played for Lancashire.

The club also currently has three girls in the Lancashire age group system in Emily Carter, Abi Henson and Olivia Thomas-Corns.

A team has been entered in a women’s festival at Timperley Cricket Club on 20 September and this will be a six-a-side competition for players over the age of 15. It is aimed at both recreational players and those that are new to the game and the club will be looking for anyone interested in giving cricket a go to join the team for the event.

A club spokesperson said: "Some kit will be provided and it will be a soft ball tournament. The day is intended to be a chance to participate and there will be coaching on offer as well as a chance to play some games.

"Subject to her commitments Kate has agreed to be team manager for the day and there will be a training session prior to the day to give everyone chance to practice.

"It is the longer term aim of the club to gain enough interest to start up a women and girls team and we will be in discussions with LCB about this over the winter months.

"The club is planning to build a new changing facility over the winter to match this long term ambition and to provide quality facilities for the girls."
