Scintillating Williams blows away Heywood batting

Date published: 31 August 2015

Heywood’s meagre total of 57 against Unsworth was their lowest at Crimble in recent memory.

They were victims of an impressive spell of sharp bowling on a responsive wicket by visiting Unsworth professional Chris Williams, whose figures of 7-12 from 12.5 overs speak for themselves.

It left Unsworth with a straight-forward run chase and they cantered to victory for the loss of just two wickets as the match ended well before 5pm.

Heywood were on the back foot from the moment Williams and his new ball partner Ben Eckton put the squeeze on the top order, after skipper Danny Pawson had chosen to bat.

Williams wrecked the stumps of Wes Hunt in his first over, Bobby Cross went in similar fashion to Eckton at the other end, and when professional Rob Nicol was then caught behind off the professional it was 12-3.

Pawson and Dale Latham threatened some sort of a revival taking the total to 26. But Latham, Dominic Humphreys and Adam Fawcett perished for the addition of only two more runs, and, at 28-6, it was down to Pawson to try to guide the tailtowards a total that could give the Heywood bowlers some sort of a chance.

Williams was in no mood to show any mercy. And Pawson, clearly trying to bat as many overs as possible, lost his off stump shouldering arms for a contribution of 28 that was head and shoulders above the rest to make it 52-7.

Chris Humphreys, who had stuck around grittily, Steve Evans and Simon Dawson went for the addition of a further five runs, and Williams rightly earned plenty of applause from the throng as he led his side off the field.
