Mayfield Preview

Date published: 22 October 2015

Mayfield have arguably their biggest game for years at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday the quarter finals of the Kingstone Press NCL Premier Division play offs against Wath Brow.

The opposition will be a much tougher proposition than last week’s opponents, Hull Dockers, who Mayfield dispatched with little resistance.

Wath Brow were at the Mayfield ground just over a week ago playing out the final match of the season and they gave a good account of themselves before going down 23 - 6.

Their defence in the first half was particularly impressive keeping Matt Calland's free scoring Mayfield outfit scoreless for the first 38 minutes.

With players unavailable due to work commitments that night it will be a stronger team that runs out on Saturday afternoon; Calland, Butterworth and their players know this only too well and will definitely not be underestimating them in their attempt to reach the semi-final stages in this, the most prestigious of competitions.

The Mayfield side came through the Dockers game on Saturday with no problems so Calland and Butterworth will again have a strong squad to select from.

In form forwards Joe Quanuici, Mark Biggins Callum Marriott and Liam Whalley along with recent forward convert Seta Tala will hold the key, as long as these lads dominate their opposite numbers, as they have most of the season this will give the Mayfield Backs the opportunity to do what they do best, score tries.

In Sam Butterworth and Paul Brearley they have probably the best half back combination in the division and with Todd O'Brien feeding them quality ball from acting half this should give them the room to work some magic.

Another aspect of the Mayfield play to watch will be the Sheridan brothers, both currently on 17 tries. There will be a little rivalry there to see who comes off best come the end of the season but both agree they won't be bothered as long as the team does well.

Sponsors for the game are Marvin and Stans Canal Street Possie.

The U18s, also coached by Matt Calland, are in the U18s cup final at Widnes Select Stadium home of the Widnes Vikings on Sunday with a 3.45pm kick off.

This too will be a tough game for the lads, who face Wigan St Judes. Judes won the Premier Division One title while Mayfield won the Premier DivisionTwo going right through the season without losing a single game, a feat which in itself deserves credit for both coach and players.

Players and spectators are reminded that the presentation evening will be on Friday 13 November with a fantastic night in prospect, including a sit down meal provided by Benjamin’s Italian Cuisine.
