Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club Agecroft Small Boats Head 2015

Date published: 22 October 2015

A large team of seniors and juniors from Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club (HLRC) ventured into the heart of Salford Quays for the Agecroft Small Boats Head - a race over approximately 3000m on the River Irwell past Old Trafford Football Club, the Imperial War Museum, and finishing at Salford’s Media City.

The first division was for single scullers.

Tom Swithenbank came a close second in his J16 race, finishing with an excellent time of 12 minutes, 47.18 seconds. This was the fastest time of all the HLRC singles.

Tim Booth won the Masters E category – an excellent result in a borrowed boat, beating his team mate, Keith Lawton by just 2.93 seconds.

Leanna Daniels came second in the womens IM3 category.

Dave Sykes came third in the Masters D race.

Considering it was cold and windy conditions, all the HLRC rowers put in strong performances.

Division two started just after midday and was again in true autumnal weather and choppy water.

The juniors in the womens IM3 four category put in good performance – Amy Aspinall, Jess Pilkington, Harriet Jackson, Lucy Lonergan and cox, Paige Fletcher were racing against older crews and showed strong determination.

The womens Masters C four category saw Penny Price, Jane Dickman, Kirston Fussing, Alison Watson and cox, Nathan Scheider pushing hard to achieve a good time.

Hannah Lowe and Molly Archbold were determined to repeat their win of 2014 and, in the WJ15 double sculls, they came through with an excellent win in 13:32.06.

Sally Tisdall and Maggie Page in the WJ15 doubles.

Emily Carter and Sophie Webb in the WJ17 doubles put in good performances, with both Maggie and Sophie rowing up a year in their races.

By mid afternoon the water had calmed for the third division racing.

Nathan Scheider and Harry Heywood fought hard in the J15 double sculls – the only HLRC juniors racing in this division.

Mike Smith and Jason Hardman in the Masters D double sculls.

Tim Booth and Keith Lawton in the Masters E double sculls both had good strong times.

Leanna Daniels, Jules Miller, Frankie Sinnott and Katie Hargreaves, came third in the womens IM2 coxless quad category.

A club speksman said: "All of the HLRC competitors worked hard to achieve excellent times and did themselves and the Club proud.

"The Head races are a test of strength and endurance, and the long hours of training put in by all the athletes can be seen paying dividends with impressive times and results."
