Catenian Awards

The Catenian awards are presented by the Catenian Association of Rochdale to St Cuthbert’s on an annual basis to recognise students who have made great personal achievements. All of the pupils recognised this year have been chosen by the respective heads of year to recognise the students’ positive approach to school in spite of challenging circumstances.

The pupils recognised this year were as follows:

Year 7 -J. Breakwell , Year 8 – T. Matthews, Year 9 – K. Gleeson, Year 10 – C. Barclay and Year 11 – B.Curran.

The Year 7-10 awards were presented in the awards ceremony on the last day of term and Bethan received her award at the Year 11 Awards evening to a standing ovation at the town hall.

Raising Achievement and Progress

The RAP (Raising the Achievement and Progress) team met this week to look at the progress of each Y11 student across their best 8 GCSEs. The team consists of deputy headteacher (standards), assistant headteacher (intervention), Head of Year, SENCO, key heads of department, data assistant and exams officer.

The team devised an intervention plan for every learner who needs additional support to achieve their potential in the months leading up to their exams. Some students will receive intervention every day in their registration period where they will receive the support from a subject specialist in the area of their greatest need.

Some students will be invited to attend a period 6 lesson in a particular subject. It is vitally important to attend these sessions if requested. The sessions will focus on the skills needed to remember and recall important information needed for GCSEs. Many thanks to all staff, students, parents and carers who are working so hard to enable all our students achieve their very best. We wish all our students well as they continue the hard work.

Sky sports report

St Cuthbert’s PE department have once again signed up to the Sky Sports 'Living for Sport programme' and as part of the project were privileged to receive a visit from former international hockey player Charlotte Hartley.

Charlotte started the day in Year 8 assembly where she shared her life story with pupils and encouraged to them to have a dream and follow it. Charlotte spent the rest of the morning working with a Year 7 girls group aiming to improve their communication and team work skills. She then moved on to work with a Year 9 GCSE group who she dazzled with her hockey skills and inspired the girls to really work hard at their sport to try and develop high performance levels.

The PE department are looking forward to welcoming Charlotte back again this Friday when she will meet another 4 groups and look to inspire and guide another 4 groups of pupils.

Chaplaincy News

We were pleased to welcome Fr Gaspar to celebrate Mass in the chapel on Tuesday. Thank you to Mrs Gutic's form 11.10 for leading us in the readings and prayers and to the Music Liturgy Group for the hymns and music.

The Pupil Chaplains continue to meet weekly and are now working on plans for the Year of Mercy and Lent. Some of the Chaplains are running a weekly IMAPCT group on Thursday lunchtimes for Year 7s - new members welcome.

As 6 of our current Chaplains are in Year 11, it is time to recruit new members from Years 9 & 10 to join the team. Mrs Ansley has been visiting RE classes to talk to pupils about the role and a drop-in session will be held with our current Pupil Chaplains for anyone who wants to know what it is really like. If you are a good role model for others and are comfortable in sharing your faith, maybe this is the role for you? Applications need to be handed in to Mrs Ansley in the Den by Monday 1 February.

The Caritas Ambassadors meet fortnightly and are preparing for our Lenten campaign to support the Caritas St Joseph's Penny appeal.

The CAFOD group met for the second time this year and are working on a campaign for Lent "Make a Splash" which will help us to find ways we can help to reduce the effects of climate change on the availability and quality of water especially in the developing world. They are also preparing for the CAFOD's School's Conference with Bishop John in February.
We have received a thank you letter from Rochdale Food Bank for the donations received from pupils as part of our Advent charitable giving.
