Beech House School

Date published: 26 April 2010

On Friday a team of four year 10 pupils attended Bury College for a morning of challenges. Olivia Fryer, Francesca Gallagher, Ali Nawaz and Aleem Tahir were chosen to represent the school, and they took part in a general knowledge quiz, a construction challenge and an aptitude test, along with six other schools from the Bolton & Bury area. The team excelled in the construction challenge and were highly praised by the judge, speaking eloquently about the concept behind their design and spending the smallest budget on materials. At this stage the team was leading overall. We awaited the results of the final round, which involved answering questions based on university aptitude entrance tests. Prizes were given for the winners of each round and Beech House won the construction challenge.

The organisers were very impressed with the teamwork shown and how high the standard had been. When all the points had been totalled we ended up coming second, just two points behind the overall winners, Sharples. The team were awarded memory stick and a certificate for their effort.

The girls rugby league team played in the area schools tournament this week. They looked, and played the part, in their new Rochdale Hornets strip. They won all their four games and were the tournament winners.

On Friday 30 April Friends of Beech House have organised a Family Disco at the Upper Prep School.

On Tuesday 4 May 2010 there will be a Junior Mathematics Challenge.

Rugby League v Scarsbrick Hall
Result: Beech House 32 – Scarsbrick 16
After the one hour drive to Ormskirk the Year 9 Beech House Rugby Team played Scarsbrick Hall in a return fixture to a football one earlier in the academic year. The Beech House team showed the qualities needed to dispatch the west Lancashire school in what started a very competitive match. As the game kicked off Beech House were actually 1 try down in the match as their defending started very poorly. The first attacking set that Beech House had proved fruitful as Syed Mahidur Ali blasted his way through the defensive to score a great try. As the game unfolded Beech House showed good defensive rugby, as well as attacking. Syed Mahidur Ali showed his excellent Rugby skill scoring 7 of the 8 tries with Ryan Matthews chipping in to score the 8th.

The players of the match were:
Syed Mahidur Ali – scored 7 tries
Matthew Goss – outstanding ball carrying skills.

U13 Lancashire Cricket Tournament
St Cuthbert’s (St Helens) beat Beech House by 17 runs – Ryan Matthews top scored with 25.
Springhill beat Beech House by 7 wickets – Ryan Matthews and Jack Brook top score with 13.
Beech House beat Lowton by 19 runs – Jack Brook top scored with 17.

Beech House under 13 cricket side travelled to Springhill to play in the Rochdale heat of the indoor Lancashire cup. Beech House started with a game against St. Cuthbert’s from St Helens. St Cuthbert’s hit a creditable 69 from their 6 overs of batting. Ryan Matthews got the reply off to a great start with Ryan Matthews hitting 25 and having to retire. Beech House needed 24 from the final over and with Jack Brook at the non scoring end it looked a hard task. St Cuthbert’s fielded well to limit Beech House to 5 runs from the over. The second game against Springhill was a more difficult task. Beech House started well with Ryan Matthews and Jack Brook hitting 19 from the first over but once they went in the middle of the second over (an over which saw 4 wickets!) the Beech House side were going to struggle. Springhill went on to secure the match by 7 wickets. The third game saw Beech House take on Lowton High School. This game saw the Matthew cousins open the batting for Beech House open confidently. When Ryan Matthews was out for 15, Jack Brook stepped into the breach to score 17 off 5 balls. Beech House posted a respectable 59 off their 6 overs and the bowling started very well, Jack Brook thumping Lowton’s opener’s middle stump. The over of the day came from Akbar Awan who delivered a double wicket maiden. Beech House went on to win the game by 19 runs.

The players of the day were:
Batting: Ryan Matthews – 53 runs
Bowling: Akbar Awan – Bowled a good line and length all day.
All Rounder: Jack Brook – Showed power with the bat and confidence with the ball.

At the Manchester Schools Boxing Tournament, held at Hopwood Hall College, the school team did exceptionally well. The two Year 9 girls, Tia Barker and Saira Mahmood, both had walkovers. Omar Tahir drew and Ben Roebuck lost on points. In Year7 Kingsley Benson won his bout. Ali Nawaz drew and Aleem Tahir lost on points in their Year 10 bouts.
