Beech House School

Date published: 15 March 2011

Issmaeel Ansari and Harrison Groome (Year 9) and Joe Hamblett and Junaid Naseer (Year 8) represented the school at Manchester University in the UK Mathematics Trust regional finals against 30 other schools/colleges in the region. The full day consisted of warm-up exercises (brain), group competition, cross numbers, head to heads and a relay race which proved to be very competitive mentally and physically. The team did not win but put on a very good show. During lunch, we visited the old charm and character of the University buildings. A thoroughly enjoyable and hard working day was enjoyed by all.

The parents who want to test their skills can do so at a later date on the UKMT internet site, when all the regional finals have taken place.

At the Rochdale Youth Festival of Performing Arts Megan Klymowec performed Etude by Ferdando Sor in the Classical Guitar section. Megan was delighted with her runners up medal.

Following their success at the District Final, the Senior team of Bethany Moat, Lydia Nightingale and Jessica Timperley were invited to attend the Regional Final held in Northwich. Feedback from the District Final ('she used the stage well', 'exceptional intonation' and 'a clear and audible voice') meant the team approached the next stage more confident in themselves. After a lovely buffet lunch at the Winnington Recreation Club we sat down with the other seven teams, who had travelled from as far away as Carlisle and Welshpool, to wait our turn. The standard was extremely high and we were reminded of the fact that the other teams were made up of Year 12 and Year 13 pupils. The girls gave a wonderful presentation, despite the poor acoustics of the room, and afterwards, despite not being placed, stated that they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Many thanks to the Chadderton and Failsworth branch of the Rotary Club for their support and to Mrs. White for taking them to the events. Good luck for next year.

Beech House entered a Year 1 and a Year 2 team in the Mini Stars Festival held at Kingsway Park. Both teams thoroughly enjoyed the event. The Year 1 team of Hassan Mohammed, Humayl Hasan and Ateeq Ur Rahman were placed seventh. The Year 2 team of Nicole Healey, Abbie Slater, Maria Grange, Mahrus Qazi, Saif Ali Azeez and Daniel Rigg were placed sixth.

Beech House travelled to Hull to play in the ISA North of England under 13 football tournament. Ten schools came together for the annual event. Beech House played excellently throughout, the highlight of the day was winning the penalty shoot out in the play off’s in which Daniel Matthews made two outstanding saves and Conor Leyland and Jacob Hill scored easily to give Beech House the win. Mr Hargreaves gave the player of the tournament award to Jacob Hill for outstanding defensive displays all day.

The Under 13’s netball team travelled to The Grange to play in the ISA North netball tournament. The team started slowly in their first match and lost to Hulme Hall. They recovered and played much better in their subsequent games, recording three wins to finish 5th overall. Player of the day was Jessica Scott.
The Under 9’s gymnastics took part in the qualifying round of the Sports Partnership Competition at Cardinal Langley. The team had only practised the routine a couple of times but secured first place. Daisi Daniels gained a perfect save and was named best performer. The team will take part in the final in a couple of weeks and we wish them well.

The Under 11’s Lacrosse team played in a tournament held at the Soccer Factory. For most of the team, this was their first experience of playing Lacrosse and they acquitted themselves well – losing two and winning one. Player of the day was Shariq Haidery.

The Under 11’s netball team played a friendly against Clarendon Cottage. Despite playing against a much younger team, Beech House played some excellent netball, particularly in the opening quarters. They won 5-3. Player of the day was Mahirah Hasan.

The Under 11’s netball travelled to Hulme Hall to take part in the ISA North Netball Tournament. In their opening match they struggled to match their opponents and suffered a heavy defeat to Firwood Manor, the eventual winners. The girls played much better in their subsequent games, gaining two wins and a draw along the way, to secure 7th place. Players of the day were Vienna Simic and Olivia Rigg.

The Under 11’s basketball team played in another round of matches at Oulder Hill. In a lively opening encounter against Meanwood, they lost 6-2. However, they were much more organised in the next two games and beat Lowerplace and Holy Trinity to finish top of the group. Player of the day was Robyn Valentine.
