Marathon Man : 26 things to do to be sponsored!

Youngsters will have received a letter and an individual sponsor form to help parents and carers find sponsors to support Damian McNulty who is running the London Marathon on April 13. We would ask parents, carers and families to sponsor each child's choice of activity – this maybe 26 bounces, 26 laps of the MUGA, 26 dances etc and these will take place next week in school. It is aimed at all youngsters, regardless of ability, having the opportunity to take part in this sponsored event next week! Please try your best and support our worthwhile cause!

Greater Manchester Winter Games

We have a number of students taking part in the GM Winter Games which will be held at Sports City on Tuesday 1 April. This will include swimming teams, under 16 rugby and 16 – 19 rugby competitions. I am sure all will have a great day.

VIP Guide – Garry Oliver

Garry, Year 11 student who is our Sports Leader and Chair of the Student Council, has been selected by the Greater Manchester Organising Committee to act as a VIP tour guide of the various sporting venues of the GM games! This will involve Garry meeting local mayors and Baroness Sue Campbell who is attending the games! What a great experience for Garry and all at Redwood are proud that he has been selected out of all the youngsters across Greater Manchester.

BBC News Day

Today we have seen students taking part in a variety of activities, interviews and filming aspects of life at Redwood School. This has included interviewing a consultant from the DFE who visited school to discuss planning issues on Education, Health and Care plans and visiting headteachers to Redwood. Thanks to staff and students for their input on this today.

After School, Youth Clubs provision

After school clubs or youth clubs will not take place next week. They will start again on Monday 28th April after the easter break. However due to low attendances the Wednesday evening youth club has been cancelled for the remainder of this term and parents / carers who utilize this option have been notified. I am sure youngsters can attend on either a Tuesday or Thursday evening youth club in future.

KS4

This week in Art SSC have been looking at the role of headdresses and masks in different cultures. We then made our own masks.

4B have been busy clearing the Redwood Way. This is a small path that runs down the side of the leisure centre. It is an important thoroughfare for both students from Redwood and Oulderhill and the local community. Our students cleared weeds and moved loose stones that blocked the path, they had to use skills such as communication and team work. Shaun from Commando Jo’s helped too.

Very tasty and hot. No we are not describing Mr Alcock but the start of his latest Horticulture activity, growing Chilli Plants!! Students on a Friday afternoon have planted and are cultivating two different types of Chilli plant – De Cayenne and Padron. Students have watered the plants (and Mr Alcock has talked to them) and they are making excellent progress.

KS3

Pupils who took part in the Sports Relief challenge completed 91 miles combining skipping, rowing, running, walking and swimming; Key Stage 3 endured all of the swimming – congratulations to all who participated.

8&9 Blue have made some excellent plasticine models in Art which they will be animating.

Lilac room have been making surprise presents for Mother’s Day, we hope all mum’s enjoy the day and the presents the students have been working so hard to create.

KS5

The Snack and Drinks PIP group enjoyed their reward of visiting Gordon Riggs this week. Raabia, Rizwan, Brandon C, Reece and Garry enjoyed a quick look round the garden centre and then a relaxing drink and biscuit in the Café. The group have worked extremely hard on their Individual targets this term and rightly deserved this treat.

The Gardening Project took a sabbatical break from gardening as Dave Wilmore from the youth service has been on Leave. The group instead stayed in school and helped to prepare batches and batches of cakes and buns ready for our Enterprise Sale. Tom N, Tommy, Kyle, Tom S and Fahad worked brilliantly as a team and helped Saj prepare orange and chocolate cakes, vanilla and chocolate buns and a banana loaf. Well done guys.

The Art groups have been working extremely hard on printing, tie dye and Batik work. The groups have this week started block printing using various materials such as cardboard, Styrofoam and bubble wrap to give different texture to their work. Some students finished off their individual batik designs using melted wax and ink. The staff commented on the fantastic quality of the work and said the groups have all been working really hard and have produced some fabulous pieces of individual work.

Student of the week this week is Paul, he is always polite, friendly and full of enthusiasm. Recently he dealt with some emotional issues in a very mature manner.

Most Improved Student of the week is Mark who is always smiling and has been using initiative and offering to help others.
