Wardle Academy Perform G.O.O.S.E

Date published: 28 March 2014

On the 17 March pupils visited the theatre for technical rehearsals and to perform the play.

Mr Brown said: “What we have seen through our partnership with the Oldham Coliseum is a culmination of a lot of hard work, long rehearsals and dedication. This would not have been possible without all the help and support from everyone involved; both pupils and the Coliseum staff alike, it has been a truly shared effort.

“We have a strong performing talent here at Wardle that keeps on growing and growing.

“‘G.O.O.S.E. itself has provided a lot of new and exciting challenges for us. For a large number of the cast this is the first production that they have been involved in and they have had to come to terms with a lot of dramatic techniques very quickly.

“I feel that each of the performers has achieved a phenomenal amount and I am proud of each and every one of them. They have adapted to many different rehearsal situations, coping with whatever came their way in a mature manner, and their commitment to these rehearsals needs commending.”

The play involves a global banking crisis which leads to the catastrophic collapse of the world’s economy. Whilst Britain opts for co-operation with the Commonwealth, the fictitious island of Insignia in the northern hemisphere opts for total isolation. Citizens of Insignia are policed and governed by the Guardianship of Ordered Society and Economics.

G.O.O.S.E was inspired by George Orwell’s 1984 and was developed by Oldham writer Ken Laming and The Coliseum’s Learning and Engagement Department. It was written and performed by students from Oldham Academy North, Kingsway Park High School, Wardle Academy and Falinge Park High School.

Oldham Coliseum Theatre received funding from the Andrew Lloyd Webber foundation to deliver a new strand of theatre based activities with schools in Oldham and Rochdale. The funding enabled four schools to engage in a year-long partnership with the theatre, receiving specialist master classes, workshops and access to theatre productions. Wardle Academy was lucky enough to be selected.
