Beech House School news

Date published: 15 April 2014

Fifteen year 10 students spent an exciting afternoon in the Forensic Science Laboratory at Hopwood Hall College. The students were given an interactive presentation about the role of forensic scientists and how they help to solve crimes by working with other specialists.

The students were then given a simple problem to solve using thin layer chromatography. This is a technique used to separate non-volatile mixtures.

The students separated samples of chlorophyll (the pigment found in plants) and concluded that the two samples were different and that the burglar could not have been at the scene of the crime.

The students were also very excited when they were introduced to the collection of many amphibians, insects and reptiles that the college have as part of their Animal Physiology Studies.

A spokesperson for Beech House School described the day as “a very informative and hands-on afternoon”.
