Beech House School

Date published: 01 October 2014

A group of our Year 11 leavers have this summer completed The Challenge 2014; this has involved , along with other young people from all around the region, their participation in a week’s residential at an outdoor activity in Scotland, a further week at Salford University sampling student life and helping children and adults in the local community (in a variety of their own ways) and a week devising and delivering their own business plan to a group of local entrepreneurs, who comprised a ‘Dragon’s Den’, along with the Mayor and Mayoress, at the end of their 3 week course.

This September, they have also completed 4 days of serving their local community which involved a few days helping a charity close to Beech House’s heart, Petrus House – a charity which helps the disadvantaged and homeless in Rochdale.

They have been busy digging gardens and tidying the Petrus House site, along with a day in Rochdale Town Centre delivering their business idea to local residents.

All in all, it has been a busy summer for the Challengers and they are due to ‘graduate’ with a ceremony at Lancashire Cricket Club later in October. Well done to you all.

The under 16 Netball team played in the ISA North of England Tournament which was held at The Grange. The standard this year was incredibly high and the team struggled to match their more experienced opponents, suffering defeats in all of their games to finish in 8th place. Player of the Day was Amy Platt.

The under 13 Netball team started their season with a friendly against Kingsway. This was a great opportunity for a number of our new Year 7’s to play their first match for the school.

The game was played at a good pace and both teams had lots of scoring chances. However Beech House just edged the game 5-4. Player of the match was Hiba Javed.

Their first league match came against Oulder Hill and this proved to be a much tougher encounter. Beech House struggled with the fast counter attacking from the opposition and with lots of newcomers in the team, this proved to be their undoing. They did, however, score an excellent consolation goal late on to finish 1-22. Player of the match was Emily Kershaw.

Next up was another friendly against Hipperholme. This was a much closer affair as both teams attacked at great speed. Hipperholme took an early lead which they never looked like losing, but the Beech House girls fought hard and just lost 4-9. Player of the match was Emily Kershaw. I am sure that the team will only improve as they play more matches together.

The under 9 and under 11 Netball teams played a friendly against Huddersfield. For many of the girls this was their first taste of competitive netball. The under 9’s took a bit of time to get used to the different positions but they worked really hard, losing 0-4. Player of the match was Amaara Rafique.

The under 11’s were playing the traditional 7 a side game, which was completely new to them, but a great experience. They struggled to adapt to the new positions against a well drilled team, losing 0-12. Player of the match was Sophie Wilkinson.

This week’s House Point totals are: Saturn 37, Neptune 35, Jupiter 22 and Mercury 22.
Form of the week was shared between 11W and 11G.

Pupil of the Week certificates go to:

Nursery Abdul Qureshi
Reception David Okoro
Year 1 Maxwell White
Year 2 Anais Aston
Year 3 Aaron Rafique
Year 4 Dylan Gaucas
Year 6 Abbie Slater
