Pupils and staff collect a tonne of food

Date published: 11 December 2014

The Heads of Community at Falinge Park High School have recently been working with families in dire need of support and care with basic necessities and nourishment.

What was particularly concerning was there were younger children in these households who clearly hadn’t been eating properly.

Upon contacting Rochdale Foodbank, it was refreshing to hear they have been working tirelessly trying to make a difference to people’s lives, however there were still an awful lot of local people who needed urgent food aid but had not accessed their services due to a lack of awareness.

The staff & pupils at Falinge Park High School decided to take action, to raise awareness of the Rochdale Foodbank as well as raise urgent food aid to last the bitter winter months, and more importantly the months thereafter.

The pupils at Falinge Park High School already support many charities and causes across the UK and abroad but it was decided that this winter, charity starts at home, dubbing the project the FPHS Winter Challenge.

The project was kick started with the support of Morrison’s supermarket who donated some food and the boxes to collect them.

The response from the pupils and staff has truly been inspirational, beyond what was expected or envisaged! The pupils and staff literally collected a staggering tonne of food!

With well over a 1000kg of food collected, which works out to be over 300 families better off this winter. We hope it goes towards putting a smile on someone’s face this winter.

Iain Wight, on behalf of Rochdale Foodbank, said: "I would like to congratulate the staff and pupils at Falinge Park High School for such an enthusiastic and successful project.

"It warms our hearts to see young people being so passionate about helping others in the community.

"We want all our clients to know that this is a town that cares, and that we don't want anyone in our community to be hungry and helpless - especially at Christmas."
