Matthew Moss High School Year 8 Anti - Litter Campaign

Date published: 20 April 2015

The year 8 learners at Matthew Moss have been working hard this term with their Anti - Litter Campaign, making a big difference in the community, especially Springfield Park.

It was interesting to find the sort of things people throw on the ground and in the bushes; you start to think why people don’t just walk a few more steps and throw their litter in the bins as there are lots of bins around Springfield Park. Our message is simple, don’t litter and promote Anti – Littering instead.

Lots of young children use the park and they might see something interesting on the ground and pick it up and put in their mouths, or they could cut themselves on glass. We care about the environment around us and we know others do too! Litter also attracts rats; do we really want to feed them?

We think we have done something good during this project because we care about our community and have compassion for future generations so we encourage everyone to pick up litter and use bins.

We borrowed litter pickers and gloves from the Council the first few times we went litter picking, and later on designed and made our own litter pickers. We also took part in “The Big Tidy Up” which is part of the keeping Britain tidy campaign. As a class we also designed a poster to display at school and in Springfield Park to promote our Anti – Litter Campaign.

In the coming weeks we are also looking at some free spaces in Springfield Park which could be cleared of weeds and litter to make it more useful, exciting and appealing to people.

Another part of this project is making useful items like jewellery or accessories from old items that could end up in the bins; this part of the project will be called “trash to treasure”.

Throughout the Anti – Litter Campaign we have been getting critique each week on our work in order to help us improve and make our ideas even better.

We hope you enjoyed reading our article and that it will get the Anti –Littering message across to a wider audience.
