Remembrance Day
“They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old: age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
When you go home, tell them of us, and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.”

St Cuthbert’s has been marking Remembrance this week with a series of special assemblies led by two of our Y11 students, Bethany Smith and Holly Peel, who recently visited the Battlefields of France and Belgium on a special schools partnership trip.

Today (11 November), Mr Turner was joined by Y11 student Elisa Iannidinardi in playing The Last Post whilst the school observed a minute silence in Remembrance of all those who gave their lives in two World Wars and many conflicts since.

PE news:
The Under 12 girls’ football team made their debut this week at the first round of the school’s football competition. They beat St Anne’s and Cardinal Langley in their first round matches. Congratulations and keep up the hard work!

The under 14’s girls’ football team was also underway. The girls won 2 and lost 2. There were great performances from all the girls, but special mention must go to Ellie Bullock for some outstanding defending and Caragh Ridgeway for a couple of fantastic saves. The girls really enjoyed the games and are looking forward to the next round in a fortnight.

The Year 11 boys’ football team have progressed to the 3rd round of the English Schools Football competition and play Lymm High School in the next round. If they win they will be down the last 16 in the English Schools’ Cup! Good luck boys!

Our year 10 girls have been taking part in rugby training as part of The RFU All Schools campaign. Our coach Chris from the RFU is coming in every week, this week they have been getting extremely muddy out in the rain and have been working on their tacking skills.

This Girl Can
Within our PE lessons, we’ve launched our “This Girl Can” campaign. This is aimed at inspiring women to be more involved in sport and recreational activity. Our main aim is for every pupil to find a sport they enjoy, and to continue to be involved even when they have left school. Over the forthcoming weeks we will be taking part in Zumba, Aerobics and boxercise as well as learning some leadership skills, with the intention of being involved, raising our heart rate and not being bothered about how hot or sweaty we get!

Health and Social Care
Mrs Ellidge's year 9 Health and Social Class had a special visit from Sean, Thomas Fisher's brother, to discuss how having cerebral palsy and Crohn's disease has affected his life. The students looked at the equipment Sean uses to help him to communicate and spoke to his carers, as well his mum, about the skills needed to care for him.

Manchester United player visits our school!
It's not often we get to say a Manchester United football player was in school today... but on Tuesday, exactly that happened! We had the pleasure of welcoming Axel Tuanzebe, a past pupil back to our school. Having recently been selected for the first team squad, Axel took time out of rubbing shoulders with the likes of Rooney and Fellaini to visit his PE teachers. He also very kindly donated a signed shirt! Both Louis Van Gaal and Nicky Butt have recently tipped Axel as being a future star to look out for. We wish Axel the very best in his career at Manchester United. It truly is a privilege to see our past pupils succeeding and doing well.

Pupil Chaplain News
The Pupil Chaplains prepared and led assembly last week for Years 8, 10 & 11.

They chose Making Decisions and Taking Opportunities as their theme. They challenged pupils to think about each door they walk through as an opportunity to do something different.

Pupils were asked to consider why sometimes they choose not to take the opportunities they are given. Perhaps they are afraid or don’t want to be unpopular?

A volunteer was invited to come forward to make a decision – whether to eat one bar of chocolate now or to wait until the end of assembly and receive 2 bars of chocolate. There was no catch! It helped us to consider if it is better to have something good when it is offered to us or wait for something even better!

Other volunteers played the Heads or Tails game to emphasise the message that some important decisions need to be thought through carefully and not just left to chance. Pupils were then asked to think about their goals and positive role models to help them make good decisions, including the example of Jesus. WWJD – What would Jesus do?

The assembly finished with a prayer and the pupil chaplains shared information of a new group they are setting up – The IMPACT Group.

Anti-Bullying Week
Next week is anti-bullying week; there will be lots of different activities throughout the week to raise awareness of bullying and how to deal with it.

On ‘Blue Monday’ staff will be wearing something blue to show awareness that most bullying is reported on Monday, there will also be blue cakes and biscuits available to raise funds for the advent charities. There will be a special assemblies delivered by the school council, an arts class in The DEN at lunch time and a talent contest on Friday. The media group have been busy creating their own anti – bully films which will have their world premiere and we will be creating the St Cuthbert’s Friendship Tree.

The school chaplains have also set up a peer support group which allows students to about any issues that may be concerning them.
