Students attend national conference

Two of our Young Leaders, Luke and Shane, attended a national conference on Wednesday at Villa Park, Birmingham, with staff at the launch of 'Champion Schools' initiative. Redwood has been selected as a champion school to support the involvement of other schools in the 'Get Set for Community Action'.

The aim is to promote and engage students and school communities in the Olympic Values: friendship, excellence and respect, and the Paralympic Values: courage, determination, equality and inspiration. What a fantastic honour for the school and particular Luke and Shane who are great ambassadors for Redwood.

Annual Reviews/EHC Plans

The feedback we are receiving from parents and carers at the recent Annual Review and EHC plans meetings for Years 8 and Post 16 has been very positive and your input into the target setting aspect has been vital. Thank you for your support during this process.

Rochdale FC in the Community

Next week our annual community project with Rochdale FC will be taking place in school during PE lessons. More details will be sent home regarding how parents and carers can support this project.

Key Stage 3

On Wednesday last week students spent the day celebrating the Diwali festival of light. All classes spent the morning looking at different aspects of the festival. Some students looked at the different costumes used in the festival, some explored the store of Rama and Sita, some looked at the different food and some looked at performing special dances in the afternoon. Students came together for a special celebration and shared their experiences and took part in a precession to the hall.

Key stage 4

This Tuesday a lot of Key Stage 4 went to visit Oulder Hill to see their Christmas production of Grease. There was lots of singing dancing and everyone had a fabulous time.

Miss Higginbottom’s lesson was all about renewable energy and saving energy. The students pretended that they were windmills making their own wind power. They all had a great time and felt very dizzy after the lesson.

Students took part in an ‘Energy Awareness’ day. They took part in lots of different activities to do with saving energy. Students were given the task of becoming switch off monitor for the day. The students rose to the challenge, one class even decided to turn off the air conditioning during their IT lesson.

KS5

In 5C project morning the students were very busy creating their ‘Ourselves’ booklets, which included looking at photographs from home and school. They really enjoyed looking at the pictures of their family and of themselves. They also worked on communication skills, making choices, working independently and in small groups.

Maths group went out on a trip to Asda learning about using money and counting. The students worked well counting both individual objects and packs of items. Tom did very well when he bought and paid for a biscuit independently.

On Monday the Council hosted their Children’s Services Staff Awards at No1 Riverside. Councillor Martin, Gail Hopper and Sandra Bowness were on the judging panel and lots of important people attended. Brandon Shaw was nominated for all the hard work he is doing on his Internship placement at the Highwood Music Service. He has sorted out music papers from two large rooms, collated and filed them. Although Brandon didn’t win he enjoyed the refreshments provided and said, “It was an excellent day and I was very excited and proud of myself”.

Also one of our teachers, Dave Willmore, was nominated for the Gardening Project he does with the students based at REEC.

Student of the week
Rachel for making positive choices

Most improved
Hassan for following instructions and keeping a positive attitude.
