Roy Thornsby

Liberal Democrat Party
Bamford Ward

Address
4 Woodgate Avenue
Rochdale
OL11 4DW

I am very pleased to have been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Bamford ward. I am recently retired and during my working career I have always been employed in jobs that have brought me in touch with local people.

I feel I have a good knowledge of the issues facing residents across the ward and have always taken an active interest in both local and national politics. I have lived in Bamford for 15 years having previously lived in Norden, and attended Bamford primary school. I am a member of St George’s Church at Oakenrod helping out there practically and as a scout leader in Oakenrod for a number of years.

I am a good communicator and well aware of the need to listen to all parties and feel I can bring common sense into the discussion which I feel is a prerequisite of a councillor’s role. As a Rochdalian who grew up in the borough and still; enjoys living here, I want to see the town improve and prosper.

If elected to represent Bamford ward, which haven’t forgotten covers Brimrod, Sudden and Marland- I pledge to work hard on behalf of my fellow residents and will act honestly and with integrity at all times.

48 out of 60 Councillors on Rochdale Council represent the same party, which I do not believe is good for democracy or the democratic process. Over recent years this has led to some poor decisions and bad publicity for Rochdale, such as the Labour leader threatening to deny resources to wards that do not vote for his party.

If elected my first priorities for Bamford would be to:

  • Initiate a sensible debate about new housing which is needed for our area for children and grandchildren, as the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework plans simply will not work.
  • Prioritise road safety in the ward, for example, stopping the red light jumping at Bury road/ Roch Valley Way junction.
  • Improve local footpaths to increase safety for older people and encourage more children to walk to school.

Thank you.
