Daniel Meredith

Labour and Co-operative Party
Balderstone & Kirkholt Ward

Thank you for reading my election pitch.

Please use all three votes for your Labour & Co-operative team

It’s a privilege to represent Balderstone & Kirkholt, as part of your Labour & Co-operative Team.

For a number of years I have represented the communities of Balderstone and Kirkholt. Actively being involved in groups, for example the Springhill Right of Way Group, Stoneyvale Tenants and Residents Group, Kirkholt Million, Friends of Balderstone Park and much more.

As an NHS Emergency Care Nurse and your Local Councillor, I have seen the impact of the cost of living crisis on vulnerable residents. This election is important to tell the ‘Tories that the party is over.’ People have lost faith in their Government and Labour locally are on your side! By providing an additional £150 rebate on band A-D Council Tax, increasing the discretionary crisis fund by another £100,000, providing a new housing service that helps with all concern not just housing, removing the ‘bin tax’ and providing free bulky waste collections.

I have lived in Rochdale Borough all my life. I studied at Salford University, qualifying as an NHS Registered Nurse and I have worked in Accident and Emergency for 10 years. I am married with two young children. I am actively involved Rochdale Soup Kitchen and want to provide an outreach service in Kirkholt. I want to promote clean, safe and vibrant community of Balderstone and Kirkholt that residents can be proud of.

Your Balderstone & Kirkholt Labour team always work to resolve local issues and to improve facilities in our area. In the last year we’ve been working to make a difference by:

  • Introducing FREE bulky waste collections, and ensuring the local tip stays open until 8pm every day to help tackle illegal fly-tipping - There is NO EXCUSE for these criminals. We will continue to innovate and do everything possible to reduce illegal fly-tipping by using CCTV and employing additional enforcement officers
  • We won funding to resurface Hill Top DriveQueen Victoria Street is next, and by bringing the Highways Service back under council control we will reinvest the savings to fill more pot holes, and improve footpaths such as on Shaw Road and Great Gates Road
  • We funded improvements to our park, installing a new fence and hedgerow along the Oldham Road wall to help prevent anti-social behaviour, and also funded new railings and gates around the park to help prevent off-road bikes cutting through. We will continue to invest in our park, with the goal of achieving Green Flag status
  • We supported Kirkholt in Bloom who won a gold award, and numerous It’s Your Neighbourhood awards in our area. We take part in and organise litter picks to keep our area looking well. We regularly report any local areas that need extra attention
  • When the Tories refused to feed children in the school holidays, we pledged as a Labour Council that no child should go hungry, and have supported families in the holidays
  • We regularly work with the police and Community Safety to keep our area safe, and this will continue
  • We have won funding for a new pedestrian crossing on Balderstone Road, and are working with Highways and the police to investigate how we can re-engineer roads to slow down traffic. This is in addition to increased speed enforcement operations by GMP particularly around Broad LaneOldham RoadQueensway and Queen Victoria Street
  • We installed a new community Christmas Tree on Oldham Road, and look forward to holding a community event with the school this Christmas
  • We helped to setup Uniform 4 All in the area which is helping many families with school uniform and is reducing waste, you can find them on Facebook at Uniform4A
  • We have built a new community and sports facility at Balderstone Library and despite Government cuts to funding have kept our Library open
  • We are creating new jobs at Kingsway and across the borough, with Rochdale’s Atom Valley set to become a dynamic, interconnected community blending innovative world-class industry with ground-breaking research
  • The Homeless and Allocations Contract is now back in-house. In the future we want to a build a holistic service looking at the person/family rather than their housing need, resolving concerns at the earliest opportunity.
  • We are creating more opportunities for our younger residents by working with Hopwood Hall College to extend their offer in Rochdale
  • We are regenerating Rochdale Town Centre and our Town Hall, last year winning an award for having the Best Town Centre in the North West
  • Labour is bringing buses back under public control, with bus and tram fares expected to be capped at £2 for adults and £1 for children
  • And, we continue to offer a weekly surgery open to all residents every Wednesday at the Strand Hub, a monthly joint councillor and neighbourhood police team evening surgery at Balderstone Library for all residents, as well as being available by phone and email. We also keep involved in the local Facebook group.

Please use all three votes for your experienced and hard-working Labour and Co-operative Team. As a team we will continue to push the council to provide the support and services we need locally. In Balderstone and Kirkholt we have a great community that all three of us work hard for every day but we need your help at the election to continue doing this.  Please keep in touch with any issues in your area.  Three Votes for Labour and Co-Operative Three Votes for Balderstone & Kirkholt
