More fly-tipping at Lobden

Date published: 11 January 2017

A third lot of fly-tipping has appeared on Lobden in little over a month, prompting more public outrage and concern for the local wildlife.

Rochdale Online previously reported on rubbish dumped on Wednesday 28 December and waste left at the end of November, which has since been cleared.

Ian, from Whitworth, who found the recent rubbish on Sunday morning (8 January), discovered a named and addressed bank statement within the waste, which consisted mainly of household rubbish and other recyclable items.

Remembering an incident from last month, he removed the bank statement to prevent a backlash against the owner, just in case there was another misunderstanding.

He said: “I'd seen on previous posts both on Whitworth and Rochdale groups where the name and address of the 'culprit' had been posted, I believe without that person being made aware.

“Obviously the lady in question wasn't exactly happy about this and alleged that she had paid someone to dump her rubbish for her properly. To be honest, I believed her version of events.

“Anyway, when I saw the rubbish up on Lobden Sunday morning, I noticed fairly quickly an envelope which turned out to be a bank statement addressed to a young lady in Bacup.

“Remembering the previous episode, I thought it best to perhaps remove it and hand it in to the ‘fly-tipping team’ at Rossendale Council. Needless to say, they were delighted and told me they are following the matter up.”

In late December, addressed mail to Melissa Austin, who had paid a man with a van to dispose of her waste, prompted a social media backlash against the young mother after the rubbish was left on Lobden.

Ian mentioned he attempted to contact the young lady to whom the rubbish appears to belong to, but did not receive a response.

He said: “I did, as an aside, send the young lady a direct message suggesting if she had paid someone to do a 'tip run' that she may want to get in contact with them as the 'tip' was actually Lobden.

“She has never replied or acknowledged.

“Fly-tipping is one of those things that infuriates the majority of people. Sadly though, there will always be those who just don't care, or are just after making a quick profit. The only way to stop it is to prosecute where possible - every time.”

A spokesperson for Rossendale Borough Council said: “We are thoroughly investigating these two fly-tipping incidents; as we do with any incident of this type. We looked into them as soon as we became aware of them. Given the location of this fly-tipping we have been working jointly with Rochdale Council.

“Evidence has been obtained for both cases and we are continuing to find more evidence. Fly-tipping will not be tolerated and action will be taken against those found to be responsible.

“Flytipping is very costly to the public purse.”
