Mayor of Rochdale to judge borough wide photo competition

Date published: 03 September 2015

The Mayor of Rochdale, Surinder Biant, is to judge the public Rochdale Photographic Society photo competition, “Work and Play in the Borough of Rochdale.”

The exhibition has been organised by the society as part of their 125th anniversary celebrations.

Mayor Biant and Mayoress Councillor Cecile Biant formally opened the society’s 2015 exhibition at the Coach House, Littleborough on Wednesday (2 September), where a selection of prints and digital images are on show until Sunday 13 September.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Biant said: "I was a very keen photographer in my younger days and I still have a collection of old photographs and cameras in the attic.”

Following the official opening of the exhibit, the Mayor and Mayoress were shown the exhibits by John Steel, the current president of the society and Lynda Redfern, who will be president during the forthcoming anniversary.

In his remarks thanking the Mayor and Mayoress for attending, Mr Steel emphasised that he hoped “the pubic would make it difficult for the Mayor to find those photos that best expressed the boroughs people in photos.”

He added: “It reflects the society's long association with the borough. The prizes will be awarded at Touchstones on 7 November, but competition entries must be in by the end of September. Handing in points are available throughout the Borough.”

While the exhibition is on, members of Rochdale's Creative Writing Group have been challenged to write creatively about the photos on show and will be presenting their efforts on 7 November.

In addition, the Mayor and Mayoress further congratulated the president-elect, Lynda Redfern, on winning the cover photo for the 2016 Hospice calendar - just one of the charities supported by the Mayor's Charity Appeal.
