Love Golf MCR - which saved Marland Golf Course - bids to save club in Wirral from closure

The company which saved Marland Golf Club from closure has put forward a proposal to save a golf club in Wirral.

Love Golf MCR took on running Marland Golf Club in 2019 after Rochdale Borough Council could no longer support the facility, and later taking responsibility for the Heaton Park golf course on behalf of Manchester City Council.

Saving Marland Golf Course in Rochdale and Heaton Park Golf Course in Manchester from permanent closure has attracted the attention of many other golf courses facing similar danger.

In January Love Golf MCR was invited to a meeting at Brackenwood Golf Club in Bebbington to support the fight to save the course from permanent closure.

Love Golf MCR directors Joe Jackson and Andrew Terry explained to the club, residents and local councillors their journey at Marland and Heaton Park and the community outreach program the team have delivered across Manchester and Rochdale.

Brackenwood Golf Club backed Love Golf MCR's proposal to save the course and Wirral Council are now looking to complete a Community Asset Transfer of Brackenwood.

Both Love Golf MCR and golfing legend Ian Woosnam and his company, RM Estates have put forward bids to save the club.

Director of Love Golf MCR Andrew Terry said: "When we heard the news the course was facing closure, we had to offer our support as we understand how important facilities like Marland, Heaton Park and Brackenwood are to the community.

“Without an affordable public golf facility many people wouldn't have access to golf. It's fantastic to be shortlisted, we find it surreal that two local lads from Heywood are going head-to-head with golfing legend and former Masters champion Ian Woosnam and his huge company.

“We would love the opportunity to transform Brackenwood into a community asset for everyone to enjoy. We have every faith that Ian Woosnam's company would do an incredible job.

“For Joe [Jackson, director of Love Golf MCR] and I, the goal is to save the course from closure and it's been great to play a small part in that journey so far.”

Wirral Council is expected to make a decision at a meeting on 1 December.
