Paul Scholes amongst sporting legends in charity game to raise funds for Ellis Robinson

Date published: 05 May 2016

A host of sporting legends are coming together for a charity match to raise funds for Ellis Robinson, a former Rochdale AFC academy player who was left paralysed after a freak accident.

The match takes place on Tuesday at Oldham Athlectic's ground and will feature the likes of Paul Scholes and Trevor Sinclair playing to raise money towards Ellis’ recovery.

Ellis was training with his team Limeside King George FC at Hathershaw Sports Centre, when the accident happened on 24 February.

One of the players did not see Ellis while running for the ball, tripped and fell on top of him. An ambulance was called and Ellis was taken to Salford Royal, where he had an emergency MRI scan. He had sustained a serious spinal cord injury and had no feeling below his chest.

He is currently being treated at the Spinal Injuries Centre in Southport. The #TeamEllis campaign has gone viral on social media, with high profile sports stars such as Chadderton boxer Anthony Crolla and football personalities Philip Neville and Joey Barton tweeting their support for the teen.

A GoFundMe page raised over £4,600 shortly after it was set up. That figure has now increased to over £11,000.

Next week’s charity match takes place from 6.30-9pm. Tickets can be bought on the day for £7 or purchased in advance for £5 from the Oldham Athletic ticket office or Oldham College.
