Rochdale Science Extravaganza expand to become bigger and better

Date published: 06 May 2019

The team behind the annual spring Rochdale Science Extravaganza have registered as a Community Interest Company to bring even more science to the Rochdale borough.

The annual March Rochdale Science Extravaganza has taken place at Wardleworth Community Centre since 2017, and is made possible through Rochdale Science Association, in conjunction with British Science Week and supported by the British Science Association (BSA).

The fun-filled event was founded by Labib Rahman, 12, thanks to his love of science.

The newly-registered Rochdale Science Initiative CIC is now planning a similar event for summer, meaning the event will take place twice a year, in addition to hopes of bringing a festival over several days to Rochdale.

Labib’s father, Mohammed, who has recently completed a community science leaders initiative with the BSA, said: “We will be working with the British Science Association festival team, working towards bringing a science festival into Rochdale. We're already planning for a summer science extravaganza in August.

“We aim to bring an inspiring programme of free events to the public over four or five days, in collaboration with science business, educational institutions, science professionals and science enthusiasts – something for everybody. Talks, workshops and drop-in events span a diverse range of subjects that encompass science in the broadest sense.

“I will be in London during November to attend the UK Science Festival Network’s annual meeting, networking to eventually bring a science festival to Rochdale.”

A date for the next extravaganza is to be confirmed, but is expected to take place in August 2019.
