My name is Tony Hughes and I am proud to be standing as the Liberal Democrat Candidate for Kingsway.

Born and raised in North Manchester, I have lived in the Rochdale Borough for the last 16 years. I attended Hopwood Hall College for 4 years, leaving with a Level 4 Certificate in Business Management, which I added to my many professional catering qualifications. I have spent all my working life in the restaurant/hospitality industry and I am currently a general manager for a very well-known pub chain.

Away from work, I have been happily married for 12 years and have a wonderful 7 year old son. I enjoy all sports both watching and participating and have been known to make guest appearances on local quiz teams.

As a member of the Rochdale Lib Dem team, I believe that we have a duty to protect our green open spaces and that there needs to be a radical rethink about the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework. We cannot simply build bigger and more expensive houses in the greenbelt without considering both affordable and social housing.

We need to strategise building on brownfield sites first; converting former industrial buildings and using legal powers to stop land banking and allowing developers to profit at huge cost to our infrastructure.

I am also a huge advocate for better mental health services. I fully support the Lib Dem policy to fund an extra £1bn to the issue.

As an active school governor, I firmly believe it is the little things that count and often make the biggest difference to people in our everyday lives. We can't always change the world, but we can nudge it in the right direction by caring about our local community and environment.

If elected on May the 2nd, I promise not to take the 34% pay rise that Labour and the Conservatives voted for themselves last year, to be available, transparent and reliable for the local community and I will fight to make sure that Kingsway gets its fair share of the funding in Rochdale Township.
