Local Election 2021

Irene Davidson

Irene Davidson

Liberal Democrat Party
Milnrow & Newhey Ward

Cllr Irene Davidson was first elected to Rochdale Council in 1990 and has dedicated her life to public service ever since. As the first female leader of Rochdale council, she brings an unparalleled wealth of experience to the role and is asking for your support once again on May 6th.

Currently the deputy leader of the Rochdale Lib Dems, Irene has built a reputation for action through her activities with grassroots community groups. Her membership and engagement with Ellenroad Steam Museum, Friends of Milnrow Park, Milnrow and District Carnival, Butterworth Hall Community Centre, The Literary and Scientific Society and Pennines in Bloom (among other groups) have made a deep and lasting impact on the local community. This also includes securing money, not just from Pennines township, but from lottery funders and public trust funds.

So what are her election pledges? Quite simply - more of the same.

“I will continue to be available, listen confidentially and take action to the best of my ability. I am available via email, on the phone, via social media and (when permitted), in person through regular surgeries. Your Milnrow & Newhey Councillor team have delivered on hundreds of pieces of casework over the  past year. From street signs to potholes, fly tipping to bad parking, speeding traffic to flood resistance, the environment in and around the villages where we live is always high on the agenda.

"I will continue to challenge and scrutinise the current administration in Rochdale. The Lib Dems have consistently opposed Labour’s plans to build housing in our green spaces and challenged over development

"Our campaigns are your campaigns. Take the issue of the illegal parking fines at the precinct last summer. We fought and fought for what was fair and eventually saw thousands of pounds returned to honest Milnrow & Newhey folk. As a community, we are at our best when we work together. Reactive projects like the ‘Beast from the East’ (where the people of Newhey & Milnrow helped stranded drivers on the M62), and working with local foodbanks across the borough (often established during the lockdown by local residents) bring out the best in people, and as local councillors we should and will continue to support work like this.

"As a former Mayor of Rochdale, I’m proud of our villages and proud of our borough.

"Vote for me on May 6th and I will provide a strong and experienced voice for Milnrow & Newhey."
