Local Election 2021

Wendy Cocks

Wendy Cocks

Labour and Co-operative Party
West Heywood Ward

It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to represent West Heywood as your Labour and Cooperative Party candidate.

This year has been a challenging one for all of us. For those of you have suffered bereavements, I extend my sincerest sympathy.

Our NHS and frontline workers have been heroic but have struggled to deal with Coronavirus due to years of Conservative cuts in our public services and wasteful outsourcing to private companies. Coronavirus has shown us all what matters most.

I am proud our Labour Council has worked hard during the pandemic to ensure our care homes have had adequate personal protection supplies, that our children on free school meals received supermarket vouchers during school holidays and local workers and businesses got the financial support they needed as soon as possible – often before any Government support.

I am a committed and passionate believer in the rights of all people to flourish in communities, where young and old alike are nurtured and there is an economy that offers job prospects and hope to all.

Our Labour Council has ensured our care workers get the Real Living Wage and is committed to tackling the climate emergency.

I have worked with older people and housing for twenty years and I hope to bring this experience to Heywood. I am married to a recently retired vicar and have two grown sons. I’ve been involved with my local In Bloom group and look forward to supporting Heywood In Bloom as part of my commitment to our environment.

During lockdown I delivered ‘Keeping Well in Winter’ booklets, afternoon tea parcels and craft kits to older people in Heywood. As we come out of this lockdown, it is my hope that the good community relations will continue to blossom.

I want to see Heywood thrive. I want people to be able to love where they live and make the most of the green spaces in Heap Bridge, Summit, Heady Hill, Broadfield, Darnhill and around the Bury Street and Pilsworth Road areas. We have the space for more growing projects to help tackle climate change. Locally, your Labour councillors have delivered a huge programme of new allotments.

The state of our roads and footpaths was a growing concern for many years. Your Labour councillors recognised this and have put an extra £25 million into highway repairs over the last 5 years.

Heywood Town Centre needs massive new investment. That’s why Labour is now consulting with local people on a town centre master plan which will see a huge injection of cash into our town. For too long, Heywood people have seen money going elsewhere in the borough

and it’s high time something was done to revitalise our own town centre. We want to see more quality shops and not just endless lines of takeaways and pound shops.

I am listening to the concerns of local people and will be your voice at township and council meetings to get the best for West Heywood.

On May 6th vote Labour, vote for Wendy Cocks.

(Don’t forget to take your own pen or pencil if you intend to vote in person at your polling station and make sure you wear a face covering unless you are exempt. This is in line with Covid rules)

Best wishes

Wendy Cocks
