Local Election 2023

Guy Otten

Guy Otten

Green Party
Littleborough Lakeside Ward

Vote for Guy Otten,

Green Party Candidate for Littleborough Lakeside

Housing: we are in a housing crisis. I will press the council to seek to build more affordable houses. The party nationally is calling for rent control to be introduced to address escalating rent levels.

Housing Quality: The recent case where mould caused the death of a child in Rochdale is a scandal. I will urge RBC to take a more proactive role in calling local affordable housing suppliers to account.

Sewage in the River Roche: The Rivers Trust have published an interactive map which shows the national sewage problem affects Rochdale. We support urgent measures to stop this pollution. See https://theriverstrust.org/sewage-map.

I will urge the Council to press United Utilities to cease the discharges of sewage as a matter of urgency. I support the calls to consider the renationalisation of Water.

Akzo site: Planning permission has recently been granted for a housing development. But has the land been properly remediated? And what is the impact of additional housing on local services – schools, GPs, buses etc?

Green Belt: I will support the integrity of the Green belt around Littleborough

Central Littleborough Proposals: I will keep a watching brief on the impact and potential of developments

Climate Crisis: The Council acknowledged the Climate Emergency back in 2019 but has not moved as fast as necessary since then. I will press for faster electrification of the Council’s fleet, for solar panels on all Council buildings (following the success at the Leisure centre), for the Council’s own activities to be net zero as fast as possible, and for the Council to take a leadership role with local industry to encourage and where possible help them to do the same.

Clean Air and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods: The Green party supports these initiatives to increase our health with cleaner air, and our safety with reduced traffic

Crime: the police is found by many of us to be at times sadly unresponsive when we need them. We will press the GM Mayor and Combined Authority to fund more officers and work to reform GMP to make it more responsive.

Cycleway proposal: The closed road connecting Calderbrook Rd and Todmorden Rd could be made into a cycleway with relatively little cost.

The A58 has been subjected to prolonged disruption over recent months including at times when no work was actually being done. I will press for work on such an important road to be conducted more intensively and in such a way as to minimise closures

The Northern Forest: What happened to this proposal? Why are the hills around Littleborough are very little forested compared to those in Calderdale?

Toad Tunnels are needed under sections of the road by Hollingworth Lake. Currently, local people patrol the road each night in the Spring to save toads from being squashed by the traffic. Other local authorities have found the money to build such tunnels.
