Rochdale Philatelic Society

July 2023, Club Meeting Notes

Jack Lindley our clubs New Zealand specialist, presented stamps and covers from dependencies and overseas post offices.

Currently the realm of New Zealand comprises New Zealand, Tokelau, the Ross Dependency and the self-governing states of the Cook Islands and Niue. These countries are single or groups of islands stretching over vast expanses of the Pacific and Antarctica. Oceans.

Most stamps issued were stamps of New Zealand overprinted with the names of islands. Because of isolation and low populations, used stamps are relatively scarce, but Jack has managed to collect nearly all of them.

Many stamps displayed were shown on covers often with fascinating stories concerning historical events spanning decades of exploration, wartime and political changes.

A benefit of Jacks talk was learning how to pronounce Polynesian island names, together with facts that not many people know such as Captain Cook made landfall In Tahiti and not the Cook Islands.

New members are always welcome at the meetings which are held at the Rochdale Unitarian Church on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30 pm, or alternatively or email Neil.Wharmby@gmail.com
