Rochdale Philatelic Society

March 2024 Club Meeting notes

Jack Lindley our clubs New Zealand specialist brought along a fascinating collection of post cards from down under. The first post cards issued in 1874 were plain and priced at a penny. Cards with pictures began in the 1890s.

What is claimed to be the worlds smallest post cards were

released in 1892 by the Austin Walsh company, contained inside Atlas cigarette packets. These small pre-paid post cards purpose was to encourage smokers to enter the suppliers competitions.

Many cards were issued during the Boer War and popular with volunteers who went off to war together with their own horses. All manner of products were advertised on post cards such as Kiwi shoe polish.

One side-collection Jack showed, was the matching up of post card pictures with similar views on stamps.

New members are always welcome at our meetings which are held at the Rochdale Unitarian Church on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30 pm.
